My career in the public sector began after I completed year 12. As an individual with a declared physical disability, finding a suitable job proved difficult. The support I received from Disability Works Australia in finding employment really helped and set me on my path.
I was encouraged to work in administration after spending a lot of time in hospital with my health issues and seeing the work of the nurses and admin staff. I applied for various administration roles, including Administration Assistant in the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and I won a position in the Office of the Chief Executive.
As an administration assistant, every day is different. One day I may be preparing for meetings and greeting guests, the next I could be compiling documents. I love how varied each day is and expecting the unexpected.
There are many reasons I love my job. From the minute I walk into the office, I am greeted by a group of friendly staff and this ensures my day begins on a positive note. I also love the diverse cultural working environment.
The role of administration assistant is so varied with a number of jobs that need to be completed for the role to operate successfully. Waking up every morning knowing that I am making a positive contribution to the South Australian Public Sector motivates me to continue to improve at my job.
There are many benefits of working in the public sector, from the learning opportunities to the well-being you receive. Entering the public sector with little experience, I have received fantastic training, ranging from attending training sessions to hands-on experience from colleagues.
Growing up in South Australia, I always dreamt of working in the Adelaide CBD - I love the exciting vibe the city offers. Working in the heart of the city means there is always something happening, which I enjoy and can participate in.
